CurioCity: Steam and Beyond! - Drones!
Join us in The Studio as we explore the history of RC and it’s current form as it evolves with DIY drones, FPV, and robotics, and have some fun flying along the way.
After many long months of being cooped up I got a call from my buddy Dan Lundmark letting me know that The City of Long Beach wanted to have us over to talk about drones, give a demonstration, and even teach some kids to fly! Dan has been hosting FPV Drone Prix events down in Long Beach. He also spearheads SWVFT — an aerial robotics company looking to innovate the FPV drone space. We originally crossed paths at one of the first Tinywhoop events. Micro Drone Guys attended and we got to see some of the biggest named pilots in the scene race head to head. Over the last few years, Dan and I have hosted over a half dozen of these events, with the intention of bringing together pilots and community members alike with our drone races and “in the biz” open houses at The Space Time Collaborate.
The new Billie Jean King Main Library is an amazing resource I wish was around when I was kid: the studio. It’s a maker space with 3-D printers and a full blown media studio with all of the goodies! Solder stations, printing stations (printers of all types actually), projectors, iMacs, green screens and all the knowledgable staff anyone could ask for. It’s really the future and any current makers’ dream. To show off all of their goodies, they host twice a week workshops featuring different techs. Currently through their Curio-City workshops, they are going over RC/Semi-Autonomous Robotics. The fact that they asked Dan to come over and talk about the wonderful technology of drones is awesome; Being asked to come demo and teach to fly is truly an honor. What an experience! Seeing all of the kids’ faces light up really brought back some beginner drone memories and reminded me of how far I’ve come as a pilot. It invigorated my inner pilot for sure! Can’t wait to do it again soon!
